Ce film est l’adaptation cinématographique du roman  « La chienne de vie de Juanita Narboni », publiée en 1976, de l’écrivain tangérois Angel Vázquez.

Juanita, de père anglais de Gibraltar et de mère andalouse, nous raconte avec humour ses peines et ses rêves ainsi que la vie des femmes qui l’entourent :

Sa sœur Helena, qui a étudié au Lycée français et qui cherche sa liberté, Esther, l’amie intime juive marocaine, qui dédie sa vie à une histoire d’amour impossible avec un marocain musulman Driss, et Hamruch la fidèle domestique qui reste comme elle dit, son unique famille quand tout le monde a disparu. En toile de fond l’histoire de Tanger durant cette période : la guerre civile espagnole avec l’entrée des troupes khalifienne sous les ordres franquistes et la guerre mondiale avec l’arrivée des réfugiés de toute l’Europe.

Juanita, dernier témoin de ce « paradis » que fut Tanger international, où vivaient ensemble, comme dans une bulle les différentes cultures et religions, représente aussi un dernier vestige du colonialisme dans cette ville qui avec l’indépendance du Maroc en 1956 retourne a ses origines.

A film adaptation of the novel of the same name, published in 1976 by tangiers writer Angel Vasquez.

Juanita, daughter of an English father from Gibraltar and an Andalusian mother, tells us with great humour of her sorrow and desires and the lives of the women around her: Her sister Helena, educated at the Lycée and who is searching for her freedom; Esther, her intimate friend and a Sephardi Jew, who devotes her life to an impossible love with a Moroccan; and Hamruch, the faithful Moroccan maid. Forming a backdrop to these lives : the Spanish civil War with the entry of Jalifenaw ( spanish­Moroccan) troops into Tangiers and the second World War with the arrival of refugees form Europe.

Juanita, final witness ti the « paradise » that was international Tangiers, where culturesand religions lived together, and at the same time the last vestige of « colonialism », finds herself left alone in a city that, after Moroccan independence in 1956, is returning to its Arabic Origins.
